Blue Texel Sheep

Distinctive. Productive. Premium Meat Producers.

The Blue Texel is a visually unique and highly productive sheep breed, renowned for its exceptional meat quality and striking blue-grey fleece. Originally a colour variation of the traditional white Texel, the Blue Texel brings together premium carcass traits, calm temperament, and high fertility, making it a standout choice for meat-focused sheep farming.

Origin and History

Originating in the Netherlands, the Blue Texel emerged naturally within the Texel population and began being bred intentionally in the 1970s and 1980s. The breed gained formal recognition with the establishment of the Blue Texel Sheep Society in 1983. Genetically, they share the same muscular build and production traits as white Texels, with the addition of a recessive gene responsible for their unique blue-grey colouring.

Why Choose Kerry Hill Sheep?

  • Exceptional meat yield – known for lean, high-quality carcasses with minimal fat.

  • Calm and hardy – easy to manage, good mothers, and adaptable to various climates.

  • Unique aesthetic appeal – adds value for boutique and small-scale farms.

  • High fertility and fast lamb growth – twins are common, with lambs reaching butcher weight rapidly.

Farming Advantages

Blue Texel sheep are hardy, docile, and thrive in pasture-based systems, making them ideal for New Zealand conditions. They offer high fertility, easy lambing, and excellent carcass quality with lean, fast-growing lambs. While wool is secondary, their unique blue-grey fleece is valued in niche markets.

Potential for New Zealand Farming

Blue Texels are well-suited to New Zealand’s temperate climate and pasture-based systems, especially in easy-to-moderate terrain. Ideal for:

  • Finishing operations producing premium spring lambs.

  • Crossbreeding programs to boost carcass traits.

  • Boutique and hobby farms drawn to their appearance and ease of handling.

They may be less suited for steep hill country, and like other meat breeds, may require occasional foot care in wetter soils.
